Wedding stationery can be a bit overwhelming when you've never planned a wedding before, but that's what we're here for! We've noticed when a bride comes to us they have very little knowledge about what goes into their stationery suite. This isn't their fault, I mean, how are you expected to know about this stuff? It's our job to know the in's and out's of stationery and to communicate that to you while leaving you feeling like you've entrusted the right gals to take on this aspect of your big day! That being said, we've decided to give a crash course on wedding stationery, starting with the timeline!
Your wedding stationery timeline depends on a few things. First things first, we need to know your wedding date. When it comes to timelines we like to work backwards from the date you will say those special vows!
SAVE THE DATES
We generally recommend sending your save the dates 6-8 months in advance. Let the day and location of your big day decide when to send out your save the dates. Remember to take into account if your wedding requires advanced planning for your guests such as: a weekday, destination, or holiday wedding, or if it's during "peak" wedding season.
Traditionally wedding invitations are mailed out approximately 2 months in advance. As mentioned above, base this off the date and location of your wedding. If you're planning a destination wedding make sure to send out your invitations well in advance to allow your guests to properly plan. When sending out the invitation you also need to consider when you would like your RSVP's back. We generally recommend 1 month in advance in order to give yourself and your vendors proper time to plan.
If you are needing additional pieces such as programs, menus, place cards, signage, or favor packaging, make sure to place your order 4-8 weeks prior to your wedding day.
We recommend sending thank you's for the gifts you receive before your wedding no more than 2 weeks after you receive them. For gifts received on your wedding day, we recommend sending them out no more than 4 weeks after your wedding day. It is best to order your thank you's when you order your invitations so that you have them on hand when you receive those pre-wedding gifts!
KEEP IN MIND
A few things to keep in mind when deciding on your wedding stationery timeline, other than your date:
- YOUR STATIONER'S PROCESS: beautiful work that properly reflects you as a couple takes time and it is always best to give your stationer enough time to do their job well!
- DESIGN STYLE: if you have a simple & clean style your suite may not take as long as if your vision is a bit more detailed and may require custom illustrations, calligraphy, or more intricate elements.
- PRINTING METHOD: If you're looking to create a more custom look with unique printing processes such as: foil stamp, letterpress, thermography, emboss/deboss, and screenprint, expect a more lengthy production process and give ample time for completion.
Always make sure to order at least 10 extra invitations, envelopes, programs, menus, etc just in case and to be sure you have some to keep as mementos.
