In Spades Café & Wine Bar

Most brands today are competing for attention. In Spades set out to compete for something rarer: presence. As AI and digital-first marketing flood daily life, real human connection has quietly become the new luxury, and that shift became the starting point for a café and wine bar concept built for a walkable Midwest downtown.
The challenge: most cafés accidentally become coworking spaces, and most wine bars only come alive after dark and lean a little performative. Neither one gives people a reason to simply be together, in the middle of the day, without a laptop or an agenda. In Spades needed to solve for that gap instead of competing inside either category.
The name gave the strategy its shape. In spades means in abundance, and that became the filter for everything: an abundance of connection, of lingering, of real life happening in one room. Coffee in the morning, wine by afternoon and evening, small plates all day, all of it built around conversation instead of productivity. The brand isn't selling coffee or wine. It's selling time.
That positioning shaped a visual identity that feels warm and European without turning stuffy, elevated but relaxed, curated but approachable. An extended high-contrast serif carries the feel of an old café menu treated in a modern way, paired with a softer serif and a typewriter-style body font for something lived-in rather than corporate. A spade mark repeats quietly throughout, stamped on menus, embossed on matchbooks, etched into glassware, never a theme, just a signature that builds recognition one small detail at a time.
What the concept includes:
  • A full brand identity system, from color palette to typography to the spade mark and its many small applications
  • A content strategy built entirely around connection, no laptops, no hustle, just people together
  • A positioning distinct enough to hold its own in a market full of cafés and wine bars chasing the same crowd
This is what happens when a café stops competing for attention and starts competing for presence.
